INSTRUMENTED TREADMILLS

For years, gait and biomechanics specialists have stated the need for an instrumented treadmill.  Though a relatively new product, Bertec's instrumented treadmill fulfills that need.  When the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the University of Delaware were searching for an instrumented treadmill, they compared the available treadmills and both chose Bertec.  At a significantly smaller price than the competition, the value of our treadmill will become readily apparent.

Bertec's instrumented treadmill yields the same high-quality data that our standard force plates offer, but in a whole new system.  Bertec treadmills offer the data collection capabilities of two independent force plates while eliminating the need for a large gait lab.  An instrumented treadmill is ideal for those who have been frustrated by the limitations inherent in a traditional gait walkway.

With variable incline and variable speed, it allows numerous testing conditions in a compact 2m space.  An instrumented treadmill eliminates the need for long gait analysis walkways.  Tests on the walking pace of the elderly can be done in the same space as tests on the gait efficiency of a professional track runner.  Each force plate independently measures all the force and moment components involved in locomotion.

Our standard instrumented treadmill is composed of two belts capable of speeds up to 15km/hr, vertical loads up to 5,000N, and an incline up to 15°.  Each belt can be separately controlled and is fully reversible.  This allows testing on uphill and downhill locomotion as well as simulated tripping.  With adjustable handrails and an optional overhead safety structure and harness, your patients' safety is protected.

Not only does an instrumented treadmill minimize the required space, but it also reduces the likelihood of the patient stepping on the same plate twice - a common occurrence in many gait walkways.  This provides reliable data and reduces patient fatigue.

For more advantages an instrumented treadmill offers, read the Edginton paper, "Instrumented treadmills: Reducing the need for gait labs" in Bertec Publications or read the University of Delaware articles by Benoit and Zeni in the Research Publications page.
